Submitted by Tim Elliott, Secretary
Minutes of CNEW meeting 4/03/2008
We had one guest: Tim Carlson, shaker furniture maker from Connecticut
Norma Hogan gave a treasurer's report.
Opening balance: $3667
Closing balance: $3844
Dave Eaton gave a description of the Hardwick Kiln tour last month. Many
members attended - photos are posted on the website. Thanks to Charlie
for arranging this tour.
April's learn & turn session (prior to the meeting) was on making pens.
Thanks to Gene Spadi for leading this.
May's learn & turn will probably be on making a bud vase with Dave
Eaton.
Dave Eaton is now teaching a variety of classes at the Worcester Center
for Crafts. See their website for a list.
Charlie had to postpone the woodcutting session he had scheduled for
March due to the sudden death of a friend. He has rescheduled for April
12 (raindate April 19). The address is 127 Thompson Ave, Putnam CT - 1
mile from exit 97 off 395. Contact Charlie if you need more info.
Dave Eaton again announced that CNEW has received a $500 EOG grant from
the AAW.... he's working on a more detailed proposal for how we will use
it.
Tonight's wood swap again had many blanks from the estate of CNEW member
Ray Hayden. Thanks to Frank White for obtaining these and bringing them
in.
Our raffle also had two non-wood items: a scrollsaw from Charlie Croteau
and a Woodcraft gift certificate from Joe Beaton. Thanks to Charlie and
Joe for providing these.
Charlie Croteau gave an update on Project Goodwill - including the fact
that it got a mention in the AAW journal. The Free Wheelchair Mission
has two upcoming events that may be of interest. On Sunday, May 4, they
will host a fundraiser dinner at Copley Plaza in Boston - tickets are
$100. On Thursday, June 12, they will have a less formal event at
Doyle's with food, drink, and music - admission is $20.
Roger Boisvert is still seeking CNEW members interested in
demonstrating/selling at his store for a few hours in September.
Thanks again to Mike Stone for donating CNEW membership cards. If you do
not yet have yours, check at the next meeting.
Charlie Croteau has arranged for CNEW to visit the Harvard Forest in
Petersham. This will include a tour of their grounds and wood ID
facilities. The date is Wednesday April 16. A group will meet to carpool
from the Worcester Center for Crafts at 9:30 AM - or go directly to the
Forest in Petersham for 10:30.
Frank White reported that the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton has an
exhibit of William Hunter's turned work through the beginning of May.
This includes spiral carved vessels and many items in cocobolo.
Joan and Conrad Berthold have a large lathe modeled after Moulthrop's
design published years ago in Fine Woodworking. They would like to free
up space, and it is available if anyone is interested. It handles up to
about 6 feet diameter and is very, very, heavy.
Charlie presented Dave Eaton with some wood to thank him for his hard
work on the CNEW website.
Dave Eaton requested help from the club to relocate the Craft Center's
lathes as they re-arrange their shop facilities. This would require that
members donate a few hours of manual labor. Dave does not yet have a
specific time in mind.
Ray Boutotte reminded members that the CNEW store has sandpaper disks
and CA glue. In the future, he hopes to stock some green wood sealer.
