Submitted by Tim Elliott, Secretary

Minutes of CNEW meeting 5/01/2008

We had one guest: "Bill" - sorry, didn't catch his last name.

Norma Hogan was not present; Charlie summarized the treasurer's report for her.
Starting balance: $3844
Ending balance: $4261

Gene Spadi reported that our participation in the Freedom Pen project (handmade pens sent to US troops around the world) has been fairly inactive.... but a donation of 3 pens by Mary's husband has led him to think about it again. He is seeking additional donations that will be sent together later this year.

Thanks to Joe Beaton - he donated another gift certificate to our wood swap.

Dave Eaton gave an extended report on CNEW happenings internal and external.

The wood cutting session at Charlie's woodlot brought out about ten members, who had a great time. They cut many large cherry blanks for our wood swap. There are photos from this event on the website.

The field trip to the Harvard forest in Petersham will be May 14. Meet at the Worcester Craft center at 9:30 AM, or go directly to the Harvard forest for 10:30. They have an extensive wood identification program that we can tour. See the website for more details.

Dave is organizing another trip to Ken Dubay's shop in CT for open turning.

Dave is also teaching a series of woodturning classes at the Worcester Center for Crafts. Topics that are coming soon include bud vases, bottlestoppers, and sharpening. See the website for details.

The Worcester Center for Crafts will again hold their craft fair in November - the weekend of Thanksgiving. We voted to participate, and will register for a booth.

Dave is working on an open turning session hosted by Roger Biosvert sometime in September. This will also be an opportunity to sell your work commission-free. More details as they become available.

June's Learn & Turn will be: Turn a Bottle Stopper with Donna Banfield
June's meeting program will be: waney-edged goblet with Rick Angus

Thanks to Dave Eaton for leading the May Learn & Turn: Bud Vases

Dave Eaton presented letters and certificates of appreciation to the following members for a wide variety of services they have provided to the club:
Joe Beaton
Ray Boutotte
Dominic Leroux
Steve Reznek
Jerry Sambrook
Jean Spade
Mike Stone
Hal Mahon
Rick Angus

Charlie Croteau gave another update on Project Goodwill - they will be having a fundraiser event at Doyle's in Jamaica Plain on June 12.

A reminder: it's never too late to pay your 2008 dues if you have not done so already.

Reid Gilmore volunteered in the fall/winter to obtain a spindle adapter for the lathes at the Craft Center. He brought it in tonight. Also, he recently visited wood dealer Chris Allen on the island of Hawaii, who kindly donated some pen blanks of native Hawaiian woods to our membership. If you would like to visit Chris's website it's: www.koawoodhawaii.com

The Ocean Turner's chapter will be hosting Richard Raffan for a demo at the end of June. See the website for details.

Ray Boutotte announced that the store has gallons of Anchor Seal for $10. He recently made a bulk purchase of micromesh abrasives for members who pre-ordered. He's now working on a bulk purchase of urethane oil, contingent on getting enough interested members to commit in advance. If you are interested, contact Ray directly.
